More Interface Changes

It’s been a few months since Jagex revealed their new interface design to the public, and we’ve all gotten more than enough time to adapt to it now. Some people like it, some people don’t, and others are indifferent in their opinions. Now, just recently, they’ve released a few more updates to the interface, improving it in many ways.

First off is the spells interface, which is probably the biggest change they made. They’ve changed it now so that the the spell icons are centered and the scroll bar’s gone. Instead of having a box at the bottom that shows the information about the spell and the runes needed for it, it now has a popup box that appears whenever you mouse over a spell icon. While it does look better now that the scroll bar is gone, the constant flickering of the box whenever you mouse over the interface gets a little annoying after awhile. However, overall I think it does look better, and it makes it easier for people to find spells instead of having to scroll around. I would rate this a 4/5.

Next is the quests interface. Jagex changed the font here one pixel smaller, and I’ve been hearing numerous rants about how people need to squint to see the letters now. Also, the scroll bar here has been changed, and it is the only scrollbar in the interface that looks the way it does. Personally I don’t find anything wrong with the font, although my vision isn’t too bad, so I’m not sure about others who can’t see as well (but I’m sure it probably is rather frustrating for them). I would rate this a 4/5 as well.

Another large change they made was for the skill advance guides. These are the lists that comes up when you click on a skill, showing what you can do at your current level. They’ve changed it now so that the gameplay screen has a filter when the list shows up, and the scroll that it appears on has changed as well. There is one scroll that shows the skill you’re looking at, another for what you can do at your level, and one more on the side for options of that skill. The scroll bar used in the skill advance guides is also unique. I like the new way this pops up now, but they’ve removed it where what you cannot do at your current skill level shows up in red. However, this is only one of the tiniest things anyone can complain about for this new skills list. I would rate this a 5/5.

No matter how many changes Jagex makes to the interface, I cannot help but get the impression that they’re running out of room in this small corner of the playing screen to fit all these options of the game. While there will be interface changes in the future, will they ever leave that small box? I believe that a bigger user interface with more room would be a little nicer, but I doubt that will happen. However, the interface with its changes is coming along nicely, and we can only wait and see what happens to it next.
